DETROIT METROPOLITAN AIRPORT

Awarded to Dan's Excavating/Ajax Paving Joint Venture in May of 1998, the Northwest Airlines Master Site Civil Project, which is part of the Detroit Metropolitan Airport's Midfield Terminal Project, was at that time, the largest heavy highway construction project ever let in the state of Michigan. Dan’s Excavating, Inc., was the lead partner of the Joint Venture. The project had a value in excess of $106.7 million.

For the project, Dan's work included the construction of a 75' deep 64' wide pump station, installation of over 12 miles of sewer, which ranged in size from 12" to 108" diameter, installation of over 2 miles of water main, and the construction of 1.2 miles of a 84" high-pressure Force Main. Dan's was also responsible for the excavation of approximately 1.2 million cubic yards of earth and the grading of over 200 acres of pavement area. Dan's placed approximately 800,000 tons of aggregate base for the airports 42" pavement section (17" of concrete on 9" of asphalt on 16" of stone).

The project was scheduled to last over 2 years. One of the difficulties of the project was the staging and the schedule. Work had to be staged around the other projects being  constructed on site, as well as, the active runways and taxiways, which belong to one of the world's busiest airport. Several phases required around the clock operations in order to meet project requirements and deadlines.

Overall, Dan's Excavating, Inc. coordinated its subcontractors and were able to perform its work, which included, installation of underground utilities, mass grading and excavating operations and construction of cast-in-place concrete structures, efficiently and in a timely manner. Dan's Excavating exceeded Northwest Airline's expectations for the project and sometimes even their own.
