North Dixie Highway R.R. Grade Separation
Through the Michigan Department of Transportation, October, 2002 Bid Letting, Dan's Excavating, Inc. (DEI), was the low bidder for the Rail Consolidation grade separation in Monroe, Michigan.
Monroe is underlain with shallow deposits of natural limestone extending to depths in excess of 100 feet below the ground surface. In order to depress N. Dixie Highway, below the railroad grade, approximately 44,000 cubic meters of earth excavation was done and 22,000 cubic meters of rock needed to be excavated below grade. For a majority of the rock excavation, drilling and blasting were used after which the rock was excavated with a PC-750 and PC-400. For the restricted areas next to the railroad, where blasting was prohibited, DEI used a trenching technique using a rock trencher and a PC-400 with a 3,000 ft.-lb. hydraulic breaker.
Prior to beginning the "bowl" excavation DEI installed approximately 250 meters of 400mm pre-stressed concrete water main to avoid conflict with the proposed construction, and relocated the traffic onto a temporary run-a-round. Following this relocation work the main bowl excavation was able to proceed.
Three main line railroad tracks were affected by the
project with two separate bridges constructed contiguous to each other. As
a part of the project, DEI formed and placed 1,100 cubic meters of
substructure concrete. Once completed with the substructure 450,000 kg of
structural steel had been set in place
