The Michigan Department of Transportation has been promoting the construction of "high impact" projects under accelerated contracts. To qualify as "high impact" the project must generally fit the following criteria:
- High traffic volumes generally found in urban areas
- Work that will complete a gap in the highway system.
- Major reconstruction or rehabilitation on an existing facility that will severely disrupt traffic.
- Major bridges out of service.
- Lengthy detours.
Dan's Excavating, Inc. has been on the forefront of acquiring these contracts and in the construction of these new types of projects.
In 1998, a 2-mile portion of I-75 near the Ambassador Bridge required reconstruction. The original schedule dictated a completion time of 200 calendar days with a contract value of $20,000,000.00. The final product required 4 new lanes in each direction, wider concrete shoulders, new median and outside shoulder barrier wall, and 8 exit and entrance ramps, while maintaining traffic. The new final product was open to traffic in 82 days.
In 1999, a 2.5-mile portion of I-75 thru downtown Detroit from I-375 to I-96 required reconstruction. The original schedule dictated a completion time of 240 calendar days with a contract value of $59,000,000.00. The final product required 3 to 4 lines in each direction, wider concrete shoulders, new median and outside shoulder barrier wall, reconstruction of 32 bridges, and reconstruction of the I-375 and M-10 interchange ramps which total more than 2 miles in length when added together. The new final product was open to traffic in 118 days.
